Davidson is situated adjacent to North Carolina's largest lake, Lake Norman. Lake Norman has 520 miles of shoreline, is 34 miles long, and eight miles across at the widest point. The maximum depth is 130 feet. Swimming, boating, fishing, windsurfing, water skiing and sailing are popular activities at Lake Norman. Jetton Park offers hiking and bicycling trails. There are marinas with boat launches, watercraft rentals and stores to stock up on supplies for a day on the water.
Davidson College
The Presbyterian Church founded Davidson College in 1837. A student population of 1,600 attends classes on the 450-acre campus where the student to faculty ratio is 11 to 1. Sports teams compete in NCAA Division I, providing plenty of excitement for the college and community alike. The campus' Duke Family Performance Hall offers excellent live theatre and music for all ages.
Charlotte Metro
Nearby Charlotte is the nation's fifth largest urban area, and its location in the center of the "Tar Heel" state gives area residents easy access to all the area has to offer. Two hours to the west are the Blue Ridge Mountains and three-and-a-half hours to the east is the Atlantic Ocean with its stunning beaches. In the city are a number of museums including the Levine Museum of the South, the Mint Museum of Art, the Charlotte Nature Museum, the Charlotte Museum of History, the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite and the Mint Museum of Craft + Design. Paramount's Carowinds Theme Park has 11 roller coasters, water rides, a motion simulation theatre and a stern-wheeler boat. Those who enjoy live theatre visit the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra and the Afro-American Children's Theater.
The Charlotte Coliseum is home to the Bobcats and the Sting, representing the National Basketball Association and Women's National Basketball Association, respectively. The Carolina Panthers hike the ball at Bank of America Stadium in Uptown. The Charlotte Checkers, an International Hockey League team, face off at Independence Arena. Lowe's Motor Speedway holds stock car races from May to October. The Charlotte Speed Street Festival is held every year in conjunction with the annual Coca-Cola 600, a high-performance race at the Speedway.
Charlotte has more than 100 parks, many with lakes along with picnic areas, ball fields and courts. There are public and private golf courses throughout Charlotte and its suburbs. The PGA's Wachovia Championship is held annually at Quail Hollow Golf Club. Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center and Marion Diehl Pool Center offer swimming and diving. Ice skating is available at the Ice Chalet at Eastland Mall.
Charlotte is a shopper's paradise. There are a number of malls anchored by major department stores, including SouthPark Mall, Eastland Mall, Carolina Place Mall, Birkdale Village and Northlake Mall. Founder's Hall, located in the Bank of America Corporate Center, offers Uptown shopping. The Peppermint Forest Christmas Shop, at Carmel Commons, sells holiday decorations year round. Antiques can be found at Old Firehouse Antiques in Uptown and at The Hole in the Wall flea market. Interiors Marketplace in the restored Atherton Textile Mill specializes in everything from antiques to modern and contemporary furnishings and accessories. Cannon Village, Concord Outlet Mall, and Outlet Marketplace offer discount and outlet shops.
